The Story about A Case Study in Fraud Prevention- Charlene Corley:

   In fall of my sophomore year at NYIT, I took research writing class. Most of the course consists of developing a research paper based on topic of interest. I wanted to write a research paper with the Dean (Jess Boronico). Him being a Math professor for most of his life and me being an Accounting major, we had to find a topic in common. We found Benford's Law which is a scientific law that is a data analysis method.

    When reading about Benford’s Law, I kept seeing Mark Nigrini on all the articles about it. I found a contact number and thought to call (thinking I would call a secretary ), Mark picked up and so I asked him if he could help me with a research paper for school and told him I was interested in learning more about it. He said yes and from then on we skyped weekly, he provided me with articles to read to help me better understand how Benford's Law works.  I learned that while working with him, that he is the leading expert on Benford's law! He is the person who thought of applying this scientific law to Accounting, in order to find fraud within financial statements/financial data. He helped me a lot through this paper and was a great person to work with. 

    After finishing the paper, I applied for Deans student internship at NYIT to then work more on it and be partnered up with a professor to do more research. I was partnered up with Peter Harris who submitted me to present my paper at the IBFR conference in Las Vegas, NV where I presented in the beginning of January 2015.
